Al hablar de memoria, entendemos un proceso psicológico que permite almacenar información, registrarla y codificarla. Como sucede con una biblioteca, todo ese trabajo de almacenaje y ordenación sólo tiene sentido si hay mecanismos que permitan recuperar esa información. El estudio científico de todos esos procesos, con los primeros ensayos experimentales, nació a finales del siglo XIX, y a lo largo de la historia de la Psicología moderna ha sido uno de los campos más fructíferos. Sin embargo, a pesar de que comprendemos mejor los mecanismos de la memoria, la propia neurofisiología de la misma, y muchos de sus aspectos siguen siendo hoy desconocidos.
En 1890, el psicólogo William James introdujo un concepto que él denominó memoria primaria, refiriéndose a esa memoria que está más ligada al presente, a lo que está sucediendo. Posteriormente, y especialmente a partir de 1950, más que enfatizar la cercanía o la distancia a la hora de diferenciar tipos de memoria se acudió a la idea de corto plazo frente a largo plazo. La
memoria a corto plazo (MCP) hace referencia a un almacén específico en el que disponemos de información reciente, de uso instantáneo: por ejemplo, cuando leemos un número de teléfono que vamos a marcar en un momento.
En general somos capaces de recordar unos 7 números que nos dicen, aunque el número concreto varía entre 4 y 10 según las personas. Sucede lo mismo con una serie de letras que no formen palabras, o con una lista de palabras. La MCP tiene una capacidad limitada, y también una duración corta, típicamente entre 15 y 20 segundos. Sólo la información que pase a ser registrada en otro
almacén,
memoria a largo plazo (MLP), podrá recuperarse posteriormente. Lo limitado de la MCP, sin embargo, no impide que sea útil: la compresión de la información permite almacenar más, por ejemplo, que 7 números. Imaginemos una secuencia como 2, 0, 0, 5, 1, 7, 7, 6, 1, 9, 3, 6, que contiene 12 números. Si se nos presentaran estos números seguidos durante unos pocos segundos, normalmente recordaríamos los siete primeros. Pero podemos convertir esos números en años: 2005, 1776, 1936. En una simple inspección hemos conseguido almacenar más números, porque los hemos convertido en entidades diferentes. Esa capacidad de agrupar los datos resulta genuinamente humana, a pesar de que la MCP existe también en otras especies.
En estudios con macacos realizados en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, el neurocientífico Carlos Brody ha encontrado un modelo matemático que explica las características de esta memoria. Los resultados del equipo de Brody se han publicado recientemente en la revista
Science. Los modelos de cómo se procesa la información permiten realizar una analogía: en el cerebro se establecen circuitos neuronales que son capaces de realizar un procesamiento rápido de la información. En el caso de los monos, seles hacía realizar una serie de tareas, entrenados para comparar y reconocer diferentes estímulos que venían seguidos unos de otros.
Una de las cuestiones que siempre ha sido controvertida es si el modelo modal que diferencia entre MCP y MLP es algo físico, o simplemente describe diferentes procesos por los cuales captamos, almacenamos y recuperamos la información. Los estudios de diversos pacientes con daños en zonas localizadas del cerebro, que pierden algunas capacidades, pero no otras, favorecen pensar que sí hay una realidad en el modelo. Por ejemplo, existe un tipo de amnesia, la denominada anterógrada que provoca que se produce un olvido inmediato de los hechos de la vida normal, a menudo por una lesión de la zona temporal media del cerebro. Estas personas, sin embargo, siguen siendo capaces de recordar una serie de números o letras durante unos segundos.
En cualquier caso, la superposición de los procesos que llevan a la memoria es compleja, y su base neurológica sigue sin estar adecuadamente discriminada. En los años 70, los piscólogos Baddeley y Hitch propusieron un modelo, la denominada
memoria operativa, que es un conjunto de estructuras y procesos empleados de forma temporal en el almacenaje y la manipulación de la información. Es más que una memoria a corto plazo, porque se centra en la idea de que hay una especie de sistema ejecutivo central que controla todo el proceso de la memoria, que trabaja conforme va encontrando nueva información. Tiene que ver no sólo con esa memoria temporal, sino también con la atención.
En el caso de los macacos mexicanos, se ha comprobado que si se incorporan tareas de distracción, la memoria operativa se ve sobrecargada: aunque la capacidad de la fase de carga de la memoria (la que tiene que ver con la MCP) sigue funcionando, la capacidad de procesar esa información, que llevará a poder ejecutar adecuadamente la prueba, se ve alterada. Como en el caso humano, los circuitos cerebrales se superponen y su capacidad es limitada. No se trata pues de compartimentos estancos, además de comprobarse, mediante el análisis que permite la resonancia magnética del funcionamiento cerebral, que las áreas implicadas en la memoria ocupan zonas muy diferentes del cerebro humano.

Continuamente retenemos información, necesaria para sobrevivir y actuar. La
memoria a largo plazo, frente a la de corto plazo, tiene una duración ilimitada, mayor capacidad, y una complejidad mayor. La MLP suele ser considerada de diferentes tipos: por un lado una
procedimental, que almacena habilidades -como nadar o manejar una bicicleta-; y por otro una
declarativa, referida a hechos y sucesos. En este segundo tipo de memoria se suele distinguir aquella memoria que se refiere al conocimiento que tenemosdel mundo, llamada
semántica porque está activada mediante los significados, diferenciada de la
episódica, que recoge nuestra propia biografía, aquellos hechos que hemos vivido y sentido.
En la última novela de Umberto Eco, "La misteriosa llama de la reina Loana" (Lumen, 2005), el protagonista, Giambatista Bodoni, sufre una pérdida de la memoria episódica debido a un accidente que le daña el cerebro. Siendo capaz de recordar todo aquello que conocía (la memoria semántica) y todo lo que sabía hacer (la memoria procedimental), es incapaz de reconocer a las personas que conocía, sentir qué se siente cuando uno se cepilla los dientes, o encontrar las emociones que antes tenía en compañía de sus nietos. Eco aprovecha la búsqueda de la biografía de este personaje para ahondar en la manera en que los humanos vivimos nuestra historia.

Escribí hace tiempo sobre un fenómeno muy curioso, la criptomnesia.
Lo cierto es que la psicología de la memoria es un campo muy bonito, en el que experimentar es barato y fascinante. Lástima que las conclusiones no siempre sean claras (sobretodo porque la gente no se pone de acuerdo sobre el modelo).
Por lo que se refiere a la diatriba módulo hipótetico vs. cerebro (la misma que la del modelo modal), recomiendo el libro "La Mente No Funciona Así", de Jerry Fodor (Ed. Siglo XXI, creo recordar).
