El lunes 25 de junio de 2018 aparece la última columna de la temporada, el fin de curso llega a MILENIO en Diario de Noticias.
Durante demasiado tiempo usamos el amianto sin saber que su contacto podía matar. Cuánta gente pudo haberse salvado si la ciencia lo hubiera detectado antes y las autoridades hubieran obrado adecuadamente. Lo que no se entiende es que cuando ya se había despejado la duda de su conexión con el cáncer y otras enfermedades algunas empresas siguieron usando ese fibrocemento, ante administraciones ciegas o compradas. Uno desea que en el futuro sepamos más sobre los efectos de las tecnologías que incorporamos, cuando se da que la ciencia aún duda. Así es razonable un criterio de precaución, aunque la duda no tenga base. Pero ¿cuánto tiempo ha de demorarse esa duda? Cuando la evidencia de las investigaciones y las publicaciones científicas comienza a permitir ver que no hay un riesgo para su uso, sin embargo, el miedo debería disiparse. Cosa que no sucede, porque se nos ha metido en el cuerpo y así resulta difícil convencer a la sociedad de que los transgénicos no son el coco que nos han pintado o de que las ondas electromagnéticas de los móviles y el wifi no son en absoluto culpables de lo que el activismo anticientífico les achaca, y de hecho en estos decenios que llevamos usándolas no ha pasado nada. Nada, de verdad.
Hay veces que la situación es más absurda aún: las vacunas han salvado tantos millones de vidas que no admitirlo es estúpido. Y malintencionado. Sin embargo, constantemente sabemos de infecciones que podrían haberse evitado con la vacunación, pero hay progenitores que ponen en peligro la vida de sus hijas o hijos por puro sesgo ideológico. La ciencia ha dudado siempre y debe seguir dudando, y eso nos acaba permitiendo evitar problemas que a menudo nosotros mismos hemos creado. Pero la alternativa es siempre más y mejor ciencia, no pseudoterapias o histerias místicas de lo natural a toda costa.
