Estoy seguro de que todos se quedaron mirando esa foto del agujero negro del centro de la galaxia M87 un rato, como pensando que había que encontrarle el sentido o por si había algo más que pudiera hacer entender por qué medio mundo hablaba de esa imagen como un hecho histórico... La imagen era lo que era: una especie de anillo desenfocado de color de fuego que nos indicaba algo ígneo, un destructor de mundos, un Tragantua que, de hecho, se merienda cada día el equivalente a 80 planetas como el nuestro. Lo que pasa es que no es ni rojo ni amarillo, la imagen sería en blanco y negro y, de hecho, tampoco está tomada en luz que podamos ver, sino en ondas de radio. Es un mapa, eso sí, fiel, de lo que sucede cerca de ese agujero negro supermasivo, donde la materia que cae se aglutina en un disco cuya luz vemos, distorsionada por la gravedad tan intensa, de manera que incluso vemos la propia sombra del objeto, como contraste con la intensa luz de la materia pronta a desaparecer de nuestro lado del espaciotiempo. Pensar que hizo falta el uso de ocho radiotelescopios y el trabajo de dos años de ordenadores y personas para reconstruir lo nunca visto es la historia que hace tan poderosa esa imagen.
Una de esas personas es Katie Bouman, una de las responsables de crear la forma de sintetizar esas observaciones de telescopios dispersos por toda la Tierra. Se había convertido hace tiempo en ejemplo de que detrás de la ciencia siempre hay personas, pero ha visto cómo, por ser mujer, personajes llenos de envidia y odio a quienes las redes permiten demasiada impunidad, esa manada de enterados, ningunea su trabajo. Ni una sola de las doscientas personas que firman los artículos en que esa foto se basa es prescindible, y menos aún ella, que aporta también la juventud e ilusión que necesitan estos proyectos. Todos esos señoros tuiteros, por el contrario, siempre sobraron.
